If you are visiting New York with your kid in tow, or you’ve got your cousins visiting you from other part of the nation, you really must want to show them a nice time and make New York live up to the “most fun city” title, right?
Now, why bother going to the usual places when New York can be a veritable storehouse of interesting dining options not just for adults, but also for children. There are scores of restaurants out there that have been designed keeping in mind the little customers who are so often forgotten when catering to the general masses. We have here our top pick of places that your kids are going to love. And, you won’t have to worry about them getting bored in a very grown up kind of restaurant.
Alice’s Tea Cup
Address: 102 West 73rd St
Phone: 212-799-3006
Let’s begin with one of the most favorite children’s stories of all times – Alice in Wonderland. If you or your kid likes this book (or the Johnny Depp starring movie!) you are going to love this themed tea shop. It’s a perfect place for a casual lunch or afternoon tea. Treat yourself to some scrumptious scones and delightful sandwiches – the portions are large enough to be shared. And, you are going to love this experience…it almost feels like a page out of the book.
Galaxy Global Eatery
Address: 15 Irving Place (between 15th St & 16th St)
Phone: 212-777-3631
Is your kid into sci-fi? Does he talk of inter galactic space travel and battles that will destroy the entire universe? If yes, a trip to the Galaxy Global Eatery is sure to pep him up. The fare served here is quite healthy, and there are enough vegetarian and vegan options to meet the demands of all kinds of people. The place is never crowded, ALWAYS delicious and really affordable. And you don’t have to worry about your kids tucking into junk here.
Mars 2112
Address: 1633 Broadway (51st Street)
Phone: 212-582-2112
Another option for your sci-fi crazy kids is Mars 2112. Just the name is bound to have them all excited and intrigued. The food isn’t what draws you here. It’s the experience of eating in a place that looks and feels like the Red Planet. Your kids are sure to go bonkers over the Martian-styled rock formations that rise from the floor, and the ride into the restaurant on the space ship car will make their day. So, while you might be trying to decide what to order, your kids will be zooming around like a torpedo all over the place. Don’t stop them. Let them have fun!
Shopsin’s
Address: 54 Carmine Street
Phone: 212-924-5160
If yours is a family that simple can’t see eye to eye when deciding what to order, Shopsin’s is going to be your manna from heaven. Nobody needs to fight and nobody needs to compromise. There is an obscene variety of foods for you to choose from. So, whether you want eggs or waffles, they have it; if you are partial to stew, they have it; if you feel like some snacks, they have it. No tiffs, no biffs, just one big happily sitting down for a cozy meal. By, the way, they don’t seat parties larger than 4; and, don’t bother pretending like you are two separate parties…it won’t work.
Well, there’s a lot more of that stuff. This isn’t the end at all. We’ll be back tomorrow and you can look forward to some more interesting places to take your kids. Now confess it already, you are just as excited as your kids, aren’t you?
