Grimaldi’s Pizza gets stay of eviction

Grimaldi’s pizzeria gets a death row reprieve from a Brooklyn Judge so the world-famous tourist hotspot by the Brooklyn Bridge can stay open for now at lest. A civil court judge in Brooklyn today ordered the owner of the building that hosts the DUMBO pizzeria to accept $60,000 in back rent and other late payments from Frank Ciolli, who was facing eviction.

Judge Robin Sheares later cut Ciolli a break, giving him until Monday to settle the debt rather than enforcing an eviction clause from a previous legal dispute. It not over Grimaldi’s days at 19 Old Fulton Street still appear numbered expect Grimaldi’s to exit once its existing lease is up in November 2011 potentially setting up a neighborhood pizza war.

Grimaldi’s is looking to open next door or on the same block, and the landlord plans to bring in a new pizza operator to take advantage of a coal-fire brick oven on site that was grandfathered before the city outlawed them. Frank Ciolli bought the eatery’s famous name from pizza king Patsy Grimaldi in 1998, who had opened the pizza joint eight years earlier.
