The end is finally near for the now the defunct world famous Tavern on the Green Mayor Bloomberg announced on Thursday that a restaurateur picked to reopen the landmark Central Park eatery and a union representing its former workers were unable to reach an agreement in a labor dispute. The restaurateur, Dean Poll, confirmed he would no longer go forward with his plans to take over as operator of the Tavern. Poll, operates the stylish Loeb Boathouse restaurant along the Central Park lake, and won a 20-year license to operate the tavern in August 2009. At the time, city officials hailed his vision of incorporating green building technology while preserving the venue’s historical flourishes.
The Mayor was clearly disappointed and said the city tried to play a role in negotiations but that the two sides remained far apart. The city would wait no longer and now intends to solicit new proposals for the venue, including for any possible plans to reuse it as a restaurant, over the next several months, the mayor said. In the meantime, the historic building will house a visitors center, snack bar and retail shop, he said.
The Tavern was a must see destination for visitors from around the world and was more famous for beautiful ambiance than its cuisine . The Tavern played host to many famous black tie events as well as wedding receptions for New York’s Upper crust for decades.
