Did you know that Americans eat about 350 slices of pizza each second? If you total that up, it comes to about hundred acres of pizza every day! In the US, there are more than 60,000 pizza parlors selling close to 3 billion pizzas every year, not to mention the additional one billion frozen pizzas that are sold. All of this makes the pizza industry a mammoth one, earning close to $30 billion annually.
Given these facts, you can well imagine how popular pizzas are in the US, especially if we also point out that 93% of Americans eat pizzas at least once a month and they are also a huge favorite among children in the age group of 3 to 11 years. That’s why we are doing a feature on some great pizzerias in NYC that offer great pizzas at costs that come as a pleasant surprise.
Kesté Pizza & Vino located at 271 Bleecker St. between Cornelia and Jones St. is a relatively new kid on the block but that hasn’t come in the way of serving quality food. The man behind this initiative is Roberto Caporuscio, President of the U.S. branch of the Association of Neapolitan Pizza Makers, and his intimate 46 seat joint serves pizzas that range from the classics to original creations, such as one with butternut-squash cream, cheese-stuffed zucchini flowers and smoked mozzarella. Their specialty is a portable, foldable mini Margherita dripping with fresh mozzarella that is reasonably priced at $6.
For pizzas that remind you of the ones your grandma used to roll out in the kitchen, Lazzara’s Pizza Café is the place for you. Their wafer-thin rectangles topped with tangy fresh-mozzarella can be yours for only $2.20 per slice. Their outlets are located at 221 W 38th St between Seventh and Eighth Ave. and 617 Ninth Ave between 43rd and 44th Streets. However, if thin crust slices are more your style, Joe Pasquale is the man for you. At Joe’s Pizza, located at 7 Carmine St between Sixth Ave and Bleecker St., you can sink your teeth into well charred pizza slices with a blanket of zesty tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella. All this for only $2.50 per slice! A word of advice – do not confuse Joe’s Pizza with Famous Joe’s that is located down the block. No, they are not related; not by a long shot.
Finally a mention of the great and famous L & B Spumoni Gardens which is the favorite haunt of pizza pilgrims. Their signature Sicilian square pie with a light and crunchy crust sprinkled with a light layer of mozzarella cheese beneath a layer of tangy tomato sauce is to die for. That too at prices that comfortably fit your pocket. Head out for your pilgrimage to 2725 86th St. between 10th and 11th St. As a pizza aficionado, this is one experience you can’t miss out on.
