For some time now the high-end retail stores, such as Krigler perfumes, Maurice Fine Jewelry, located in the basement of the Plaza have been praying for more people to stray into their outlets and boost their business. Their prayers have been heard and answered and they have Chef Todd English to thank for it ever since he opened up a European food hall there.
Get ready to treat your taste buds to food with a European twist at the Todd English’s Plaza Food Hall, which is part restaurant and part market. This place draws inspiration from vibrant European markets like the San Lorenzo Mercato Centrale in Florence and the food hall at Harrod’s in London. Walk in and take your pick from a tapas bar, a sushi bar, a Wood-fired oven for pizza, a grill and an Asian dumpling bar. In addition to all this, if you feel like taking some goodies back home, you can also buy cheese, meats, bread, chocolate, and fresh seafood here.
Todd English is probably most popular for his restaurant “Olives” in Boston. Apart from that, he’s also opened pizzerias at various airports, not to mention outposts on the Queen Mary 2 and at Disneyland. Now, he has included steak, seafood, pub food and cupcakes to his portfolio.
The Plaza Food Hall, spread over 5,400 square feet, has been designed by Jeffrey Beers. As we mentioned before, the variety here is pretty staggering. You want to buy top notch fresh produce, it’s here; you want prepared food on the go, it’s here; you want casual dining options, there are six distinct stations for you to choose from. If you can’t find a seat in front of your favorite station, that’s hardly a problem. Menus from all stations are available wherever you sit and your orders will be delivered to you even if you are sitting at the farthest corner of the food hall.
The Ocean Grill and Oyster Bar is definitely the centerpiece of the Plaza Food Hall. Take your place at the counter and slurp some delicious briny oysters or order grilled catch of the day. Another thing worth a try is the Roman-style pizza, which includes classic margherita pies and a sweet and salty combo of prosciutto and fig with a rosemary crust. And, of course, how can you ignore the burger here? It’s packed with 1/2 pound American kobe, garnished with grilled bacon, fried onion, gorgonzola, roasted tomato, and bbq sauce. What a knockout punch! For sweets, try the cupcakes by Todd English’s daughter’s “Isabelle’s Curly Cakes.” There are also chocolate bars made by English himself, including a PB&J bar and key lime caramels.
You can eat/shop/browse/drool at the Plaza Food Hall to your heart’s content or until you use up all the money in your wallet, but you’ll have one hell of a time, that’s for sure!
