Asus is primarily known for its lineup of exclusive notebooks, but every once in a while they surprise their audience by launching some great mainstream notebooks that deliver solid performance. Their new product, the 15 inch gaming notebook G51J, hopes to conquer the budget gaming section of the society.
When you look at the G51J in detail, you find that it shares a lot of features with its predecessor G51VX, and yet it is $200 less than the VX. G51J comes with an Intel Core i7 Processor, Nvidia graphics, and 1GB dedicated video memory, among other things. Those who’ve aspired for an Alienware can seek solace in the G51J since it’s priced under $1500.
Considering that this is supposed to be a gaming notebook, the screen resolution is a very important factor. So, let’s jump straight to that. The display on the G51J does not disappoint you. It has good color saturation the viewing angles are a lot better than most other notebooks in the market. Vertical and horizontal viewing angles are excellent, though at very steep angles, the colors do look washed out. The backlight brightness is quite adequate when viewable in a bright room, but, it isn’t really viewable outdoors.
Moving onto the sounds, the G51J comes with Altec Lansing speakers which aren’t bad sounding at all. However, given the size of the notebook and its purpose, a subwoofer would have been a great plus point. Another great accessory ASUS could’ve provided with the notebook is a headphone, especially one that is surround-sound enabled. After all, what is a gaming experience without the thundering sound quality to blow your mind?
In keeping with their tradition of including freebies with retail notebooks, ASUS comes with a very comfortable gaming backpack and a gaming mouse from Razer Copperhead. The green backpack is indeed quite a catch. It has adequate padding around the shoulders and a nice gel-padded carrying handle. It looks great and feels great too when you carry it. The Copperhead mouse is much better than what other companies hand out as free gifts. Gaming enthusiasts are going to love it.
