Sliding economy and raising inflation can be quite the party pooper for those who enjoy shopping. C’mon, who among us hasn’t felt the pinch of the highs and lows (mostly lows, at this time) of the economy? Smart people decide to buy their time and save up for the rainy day, consoling themselves by thinking of all the shopping trips they are going to take in the future. Smarter people, on the other hand, always manage to find a way out of this financial screw up. They can still go shopping and come back laden with shopping bags, without the slightest hint of guilt or distress.

If you want to join the “Smart Shopper Brigade,” we’ll let you in on the secret…it is called thrift shopping. Two small, simple words that can keep you from breaking your bank and yet, ensure you have a good time, full of great buys and un-missable deals! The anticipation of what you may find in a thrift shop coupled with the thrill of the hunt adds up to an enjoyable and exciting outing.

Besides, you have to admit that thrift shops offer you quite a few advantages over the usual retail outlets you frequent. There’s always a possibility that you will come across nearly-new merchandise at dirt cheap prices, which translates into significant savings for you. Also, if you are interested in collectibles, thrift shops are a great place to lay your hands on undiscovered treasures.

One great thrift shop in New York is the Cure Thrift Shop in East Village. Liz Wolff is the founder of this thrift shop and a diabetic herself, she contributes a hefty portion of the sales to the Diabetes Research Institute. The website has described her as a “fourth generation garage sale and thrift shop scouring, dumpster diving woman,” who has “combined her passion for arts and antiques with her personal mission: to dedicate her life to finding a cure for diabetes.”

The Cure Thrift Shop is a gigantic place. The first floor has jewelry cases and vintage furniture, while in the basement you can find clothes, shoes and handbags. The entire stock of the store is sourced from donation alone. Twice a year this thrift shop organizes sales which attracts a lot of people from all over New York.

On the 23rd of this month, the Cure Thrift Shop is celebrating its second anniversary. Customers will be treated to complimentary wine and birthday goodies and you can participate in silent auctions and raffles. A $10 donation is required for entry and, as is customary, all proceeds will be donated to the Diabetes Research Institute. You can shop to your heart’s content and do your bit for the good of society as well.
