There used to be a time when Nokia ruled the roost in all things related to cell phones. That may not be the case anymore but the mighty veteran isn’t ready to give up its title yet. They seem to be on a mega release mode where model after model after model of mid range phones are being launched into the market. Before consumers are able to come to term with one release, they have a dozen more thrown at them.
One of the newer mid range models is the Nokia 6700 Slide. If you are on an anti-touchscreen drive, you are going to love this phone, since it is refreshingly old fashioned. The small chunky shape makes you almost nostalgic. You take heart from the bulkiness of the phone and it feels firm and secure in your hands. It’s only 4.6cm wide and 9.5cm with a 2.2-inch screen taking up most of the space.
This aforementioned screen has a very clear display with a resolution of 320×240 pixels. The ambient light sensor on the phone’s front adjusts the screen’s brightness according to your surroundings. The slide out alpha-numeric keypad is a little disappointing. We would have preferred something with bigger size keys. While they aren’t totally useless, a person with slightly oversized fingers could have some trouble using them. Also, some of the keys located higher up are quite tricky to be used, making for very awkward handling of the keypad.
The five-megapixel camera with an LED flash is quite average. Nothing really great about it, in fact. If your hands shake even slightly, you end up with blurry photos. And even when all goes well, picture quality isn’t all that great. When shooting videos, the phone is quick and easy, but again the quality leaves much to be desired and recorded video is quite “stuttery.”
As far as music player goes, there are no complaints. But, we do wonder when Nokia is going to switch to industry-standard 3.5mm instead of persisting with the 2.5mm headphone sockets. The pair of headphones included with the phone doesn’t offer too much sound clarity and they are uncomfortable to have in your ears.
Our overall impression about the phone is favorable, in spite of its drawbacks. It’s built solidly and offers great Facebooking and basic web browsing within an intuitive interface. However, you need to keep in mind that for the price of the Nokia 6700 Slide, you could easily pick up a more decent phone, even a touchscreen one, if you please with similar features, and in many cases more!
