The state of New York announced its plan to extend the Great Appliance Swipe Out, offering residents rebates or purchasing energy efficient appliances.
Following the great success of Cash for Clunkers, several states are looking to expand on the success of the program to encourage consumers to purchase new energy efficient appliances, and in turn recycle their old ones.
New York state rolled out the Great Appliance Swipe out in February, one of the first states in the country to do so. During a 10 day period of the program, New York residents purchased 22,000 washing machines, 24,000 refrigerators, 2,000 freezers and more than 2,700 dishwashers. The purchases resulted in over $8 million in rebates alone during that 10 day period.
Due to over $16 million remaining in the federal funding, New York has all intentions to provide the rebates until the money runs out. Rebates will run anywhere from $55 to $555, dependant on how many new appliances you purchase, along with how efficient the appliances are.
For New Yorkers to qualify for the rebate, the appliances they purchase must bear a blue Energy Saver star logo, complete a short application form, and the check will be mailed to you. The maximum rebate is only available if you trade in all 3 appliances (refrigerator, dishwasher and washing machine)for new appliances that not only bear the Energy Saver logo, but must also meet much stricter guidelines outlined by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency.

No offense but I can’t believe anyone is crazy enough to buy a new car or appliance right now in this economy. Considering that a healthy chunk of 2010 Cash 4 Clunkers cars have already been repossessed (i.e. http://repofinder.com) why not just go to local banks and credit unions and buy these repo cars back for half the retail price? If you’re going to buy junk at least don’t over pay.
